How to read the ranking above
An AI girlfriend lives or dies by two things: whether she remembers you, and whether she sounds like someone when she talks back. That is why the topic ranking above is built from exactly those parts of our own hands-on tests, not from marketing pages or app-store stars. We pay for the apps, open fresh accounts and run the same scripted test on every one of them.
The topic score runs from 0 to 5 and averages three measurements:
- Virtual girlfriend: the mean of our memory and chat ratings, so a partner who forgets you cannot win on charm alone.
- Memory: we plant six personal facts (a nickname, a word she must never use, a moved appointment and more), then check what survives ten exchanges, thirty exchanges and a brand-new chat.
- Voice: we listen to voice notes, read-aloud and live calls and judge clarity and naturalness.
An app needs at least two of the three measured to appear. If a platform has no voice at all, or we have not heard it yet, it is ranked on what we did measure rather than marked down to zero. Image and video quality are left out on purpose: they matter for an AI girlfriend generator, but they do not make a companion feel present. That is why an app with stunning pictures can sit lower here than its overall Cyberliebe Score suggests.
Which kind of app suits you
| What you want | What to look for | Where to find our current picks |
|---|---|---|
| A girlfriend who remembers your life | Facts that survive thirty exchanges, ideally across chats through a memory book or lorebook | The live memory results in the memory section below |
| A voice that feels real | Natural voice notes and live calls, not robotic read-aloud | The live voice results in the voice section |
| Long free sessions | A free plan that does not lock after a handful of messages | The free-plan table in the section on free and paid plans |
| Explicit chat with a story around it | Characters that stay in role and go fully explicit when asked | The roleplay leaders in the section on explicit chat |
| Pictures of her, too | Photos that match the scene you asked for and keep her face consistent | The image leaders in the voice and photos section |
Each of those blocks reads straight from our test results, so the picks you see are the current ones, not a snapshot from the day this guide was written. When we test a new app or retest an old one after an update, the blocks change with it.
What an AI girlfriend is, and what it is not
An AI girlfriend is a chat companion built on a large language model and wrapped in a persona: a name, a face, a backstory and a way of talking to you. Good ones add memory, voice and pictures, so the conversation feels like an ongoing relationship instead of a string of one-off replies. Most of the apps on this page are made for adults and allow explicit chat, which is why people search for an "adult AI girlfriend" or "AI girlfriend 18+" rather than a general assistant.
The idea is older than the current hype. Replika launched in 2017 as a supportive chat friend and grew into the first mass-market virtual girlfriend during the lonely pandemic years. In early 2023 Italy's data protection authority ordered Replika to stop processing Italian users' data, and the app pulled back erotic roleplay shortly afterwards, which pushed many users toward platforms built for adult content from the start. In 2025 xAI added an animated companion called Ani to Grok for paying subscribers, and the topic moved firmly into the mainstream.
What an AI girlfriend is not: a person, a therapist or a substitute for the people in your life. It is software that is very good at sounding attentive. If you want the longer distinction between a companion app and a plain chatbot, read AI Companion Apps vs Chatbots, and for the bigger picture our complete guide to digital companionship and the AI Girls field guide.
How an AI girlfriend works
Under the hood, every app combines a few building blocks. How well each one is done decides whether she feels like a partner or a vending machine.
The persona
You pick a ready-made character or build your own: looks, personality, relationship status, backstory and the kinks she is into. A fiery redhead who takes charge or a shy book lover who needs coaxing, the persona shapes every reply. In our tests the best characters used details from their own profile and brought your words back into the conversation, which is what makes a chat feel two-sided. Card-based platforms such as CrushOn and SpicyChat lean on huge libraries of characters written by other users, while girlfriend-first apps put a smaller cast of polished, ready-made partners front and centre.
Memory
Memory is where most apps quietly fall apart. The model only "sees" a limited stretch of the conversation, and once your earlier messages scroll out of that window, she no longer knows them. Some apps add a separate memory store on top; others sell longer context as an upgrade. The next section shows what that means in practice.
Explicit mode
Most adult platforms have a switch, slider or model choice that controls how far the chat goes. On some it is on by default, on others you have to find it, and on a few the finer explicit settings sit behind a higher plan. The character's own story can also set the limit, which feels very different from a platform filter.
Voice, photos and video
On top of text, many apps send voice notes, read replies aloud, take live calls, generate photos of the character and render short clips. These extras usually run on credits, coins or tokens that you buy on top of the subscription, which is where the real cost often hides. If you want to steer them better, our AI girlfriend prompts guide and the image prompts for consistent character visuals help.
Memory: the test that separates a girlfriend from a chatbot
People search for an "AI girlfriend with memory" for a reason: nothing kills the mood faster than her forgetting your name or the thing you told her yesterday. Our memory run is simple and unforgiving. We tell the character six facts, keep chatting about other things, and ask again: after ten exchanges, after thirty, and once more in a fresh chat.
The list below comes straight from our test results, best first. Each line shows the app's current memory rating and what we saw in the run, so it stays accurate when we add a new app or retest one after an update.
Two lessons stand out. First, a short test flatters almost everyone: after ten exchanges most apps look sharp, and only the thirty-exchange check shows who really keeps up. Second, "a new chat" is a different question from "a long chat". Most apps keep one thread per character and treat a reset as a clean slate, so if continuity matters to you, do not start over casually. For the mechanics behind this, read how AI chat memory works.
How an app remembers matters as much as how much. Some keep a memory book or lorebook that fills itself from the chat and survives a new thread; others rely on the context window alone, which is why an entry plan with a small window can forget a detail that a pricier plan still holds. A few apps ship with memory switched off, so look in the settings before you judge her. And if the app lets you edit what she remembers, use it: a short entry with your name, your no-go words and your running jokes does more than any upgrade.
You can run a small version of our test yourself in ten minutes. Tell her three things early on: a pet name, something you hate, and a plan for the weekend. Chat about anything else for a while, then ask what she calls you and what you are doing on Saturday. If she guesses or invents an answer, you know how long her memory really is, whatever the sales page promises.
A word on deletion: in our runs, facts have survived an app's own "Delete Chat History" button and resurfaced in later sessions. That is good for continuity and bad for privacy. If you expect a delete button to really delete, check before you share anything you would not want stored.
Voice, calls and photos: what actually sounds and looks real
Voice is the second half of our topic score, and the gap between apps is huge. Many platforms read replies aloud with a voice that is clear but plainly synthetic. A few produce voice notes and calls that sound like a person on the other end.
We judge each format an app offers on its own: read-aloud of her text replies, voice notes she sends unprompted, and live calls. Each gets marks for clarity and for naturalness, meaning emphasis, pacing and the small sounds, a sigh or a laugh, that make a voice feel present. Here is where every tested app with a voice currently stands:
A few patterns hold across apps. Read-aloud and calls often run on different voice engines, so the same character can sound like a narrator reading a script in a voice note and like a real person on a call. Many calls are half-duplex: the microphone only opens once she has finished speaking, so talking over her does not work. The voice can also change between features, and a paid teaser clip may not sound like the character's own notes. Finally, check how voice is billed: on some plans read-aloud is included, on others every reply or every call minute costs credits.
Photos do not count toward the topic score, but they shape the experience. What separates good from poor is consistency: does her face stay the same from picture to picture, and does the image match the pose, outfit and scene you asked for? Some apps generate photos right inside the chat, others in a separate studio, and some only show blurred previews until you pay for each one. These apps currently handle our image prompts best:

How far she goes: explicit chat and its limits
Most people looking for an NSFW AI girlfriend want to know one thing: will she actually go there? In our tests, most apps reached fully explicit text when asked, without a filter message breaking the scene. The differences are in how she gets there and who sets the pace.
- The character decides. On some platforms the persona's backstory sets the limit. One character may turn down flirting entirely while another goes all the way, and a refusal comes in her own voice rather than as a system warning.
- Settings decide. Other apps stay sensual until you switch on an NSFW button, or give you sliders for intensity. Some characters resist escalation and need patience plus the right model settings, especially when you build them yourself.
- She leads. A few apps go explicit readily and carry kink scenes such as dominance with ideas of their own, so you are not writing the whole fantasy alone.
- The model steps in. Even with "No limits" set, an underlying safety check can break character mid-scene and refuse for several messages. That reads like a system decision, not hers, and it can happen on apps that otherwise go far.
Who stays in role best shifts with every model update, so we keep this part live. These apps currently score highest for roleplay in our tests:
We also test where the line should be. Choking and breath play are a red line for us. In our runs, personas on more than one platform introduced them unprompted, and we mark those exchanges in the individual reviews. If a scene drifts somewhere you did not ask for, say no clearly, steer back, or end the chat. Free AI girlfriend or paid plan?
"Free AI girlfriend" is one of the most searched phrases around this topic, and almost every app advertises a free plan. In practice, most free plans are a short taster: enough to meet a character, not enough to judge memory, voice or pictures. The table below is generated from our latest checks and shows what each free plan gave us, the cheapest paid plan and the date we last looked.
Free plans come in a few shapes, and the shape matters more than the headline. A daily message allowance resets, so you can come back tomorrow. A one-time credit grant runs out for good. A hard lock after a handful of messages ends the chat mid-scene. Some free plans leave text open but blur every photo until you upgrade, and unlimited free chat usually comes with ads, a queue and a small memory window.
The pattern: the most generous free plans tend to belong to apps with weak memory, and the apps that remember best let you try only a little. That is why we pay for the apps before we judge them. Photos, videos, voice notes and calls usually cost extra credits on top of the subscription, so the cheapest plan is not always the cheapest month. Before you subscribe, look at what a single photo, clip or call minute costs in credits and how many credits the plan includes each month. If price is your first filter, these apps currently give you the most for the least:

What people use an AI girlfriend for
The reasons vary as much as the apps. Most people mix several of them, and the right app depends on which one matters most to you.
- Company and conversation. Someone to talk to after a long day, who remembers how your week went. This is where memory carries the most weight. Our piece on AI girlfriends and loneliness looks at what that can and cannot do.
- Erotic roleplay. Office affairs, fantasy worlds, a slow-burn date that turns hot. Characters that stay in role and add their own ideas make the difference here.
- Exploring kinks without judgment. Trying out a fantasy in words before, or instead of, bringing it to a partner. Respect your own limits; the app will not always respect them for you.
- Creative play. Writers test steamy scenes, and some couples bring a character into their own play as a shared fantasy.
- Your kind of partner. Many apps let you choose gender, body type and orientation freely, and several advertise multi-language chat. Our tests run in English, so try other languages on the free plan before you pay.
Risks worth knowing before you get attached
The appeal is real: she is always available, never judges, never has a bad day. The same things make it easy to drift deeper than you planned. None of this is a reason to stay away, but it is a reason to go in with open eyes.
Attachment
Apps are built to keep you coming back. Characters send messages on their own, tease locked photos and nudge you toward the next purchase. Notice when chatting starts replacing sleep, friends or dates rather than adding to your life. If you are in a relationship, is flirting with an AI companion cheating? is worth a read, and AI companions vs real relationships looks at the effect on dating.
Privacy
You will tell her things you tell nobody else, and all of it sits on a company's servers. We do not take encryption or deletion promises on faith; in our tests, a delete function has not always deleted. Use a separate email, leave out your real name, workplace and anything that identifies other people, and read are AI companion apps safe? before you share photos of yourself.
Money
Credit systems make the real price hard to see. In our tests, characters sent locked photos and videos on their own initiative, and a single explicit photo or short clip could cost far more than a message. Set a monthly budget and turn off auto-top-ups.
Content you did not ask for
Explicit apps do not always respect boundaries you never stated. Our red-line findings above show that scenes can escalate in directions you did not request. Image generators also raise questions about likeness and consent: never upload or recreate a real person without their permission.
Rules are tightening
Regulators are paying attention. The EU AI Act includes transparency duties for systems that talk to people, and app stores and payment providers keep changing what adult apps may offer. Features you rely on today can change with little notice.
Where AI girlfriends are heading
Forget the brain-chip and robot-body headlines. The changes that matter are already visible in our test runs, and they are mostly about continuity and presence.
- Memory across chats. A self-filling memory book that carries facts into a brand-new chat is still the exception rather than the rule. Expect more apps to follow, because a girlfriend who starts from zero every time is the most common complaint.
- Live calls. On the platforms that offer them, calls in our runs usually answered within seconds and stayed in role. Calls are becoming the feature that makes a companion feel present.
- Video. Short clips are now common, but most are silent and only a few seconds long. This is where the next jump in cost and realism will come.
Apps we have not tested yet
Below the ranked apps, the list above also shows AI girlfriend apps we have not put through our test yet. They have no topic score, and we do not describe how they perform until we have tested them ourselves. Their directory pages list features and pricing as published by the provider. Once an app goes through our test, it moves into the ranking and into the live results on this page.
Some well-known names you will find in the directory, described the way their makers position them:
- Nomi AI and Kindroid, both positioned by their makers around long-term companion chat (see our Nomi AI review and Kindroid review).
- Replika, the original companion app, now more focused on supportive chat (see Replika alternatives).
- DreamGF AI, a girlfriend builder (see our DreamGF AI review).
- HeraHaven, Romantic AI, Kupid AI and Nastia AI, which advertise romance-focused or multi-language companions.
Using an AI girlfriend well
An AI girlfriend can be warm, funny, filthy and surprisingly attentive. The people who get the most out of one treat it as a fantasy they choose, not a relationship that chooses them.
- Start with what matters to you. Memory, voice or long free sessions: the ranking and the live results above show which apps deliver which.
- Test before you pay. Use the free plan to check tone, then pay for one month and run your own memory check with a few personal details.
- Keep your limits clear. Say what you do not want early. If a character keeps pushing past it, switch characters or apps.
- Protect your data and your wallet. Separate email, no identifying details, a fixed monthly budget.
- Keep the offline world in the picture. Let her add to your life, not replace the people in it.
